Down Jacket Quality Inspection Guide for Buyers

Start with the sales market and intended use
A down jacket specification should begin with the use case, not the assumption that thicker is always better. Urban commuting, lightweight travel, outdoor activity, and work in low temperatures have different requirements for insulation, weight, wind protection, and ease of movement.
Do not source a down jacket by choosing duck or goose down and comparing one fill-power figure. A reliable order defines the filling specification, fill weight for each size, baffle construction, shell and lining materials, resistance to down leakage at garment level, sample standard, and bulk QC method together.
A long and a short jacket, or a slim and a relaxed fit, will wear differently even when they use the same filling. Brands, trading companies, and corporate buyers also need to confirm that bulk production uses the agreed filling grade, that fill weight remains stable, and that labeling meets the target-market requirements.
For products sold in China, GB/T 14272—2021, Down Garments, may be used as a reference. It mainly applies to garments with woven textile fabrics as the principal shell and down as the main filling. The applicable standard for knitted products should be checked separately. Export orders must also be reviewed against destination-country regulations, buyer standards, and labeling requirements.

How to compare duck down, goose down, and color
Common fillings include duck down and goose down and may also be classified as white or gray. Color does not indicate insulation performance. White down is often selected for light-colored shells mainly to reduce the risk of show-through.
Goose and duck down cannot be ranked by species alone. Some goose down may have larger clusters and higher fill power, but a high-quality duck down can still perform better than a lower-grade goose down.
Compare down cluster content, fill power, fill weight, cleanliness, odor, and lot consistency under the same test conditions. The words ‘goose down’ or ‘white down’ do not establish filling quality by themselves.
Separate three filling metrics that are often confused
Down cluster content, fill power, and fill weight answer different questions. Purchasing documents should state all three together with their test basis.
Down cluster content is the percentage by mass of down clusters in the down-and-feather filling and is one important indicator of down quality. The older Chinese metric often translated as ‘down content’ is not the same as down cluster content: it included both down clusters and down fibers. The two figures cannot be converted using a fixed ratio.
Fill power is the volume occupied by a defined mass of down under standard test conditions and mainly indicates its ability to loft. When other conditions are comparable, it can help assess warmth-to-weight potential, but it is not a temperature rating for the complete jacket. Figures produced by different test methods may not be directly comparable.
Fill weight is the actual mass of down put into the garment and is normally stated in grams. It should be reviewed by size, garment length, and filling area rather than stated as one figure for all sizes. Confirm the filling plan for the body, sleeves, hood, and other main areas.
A high fill power with insufficient fill weight may not deliver the intended insulation. A high fill weight combined with unsuitable down cluster content, fabric, or construction may create excessive weight, clumping, uneven filling, or down leakage. Pressing a sample by hand and observing recovery is only a quick visual check; it does not replace a laboratory fill-power test.
Inspect the shell, lining, and baffle construction
Compliant filling does not guarantee a stable finished garment. Down leakage, cold spots, and uneven distribution are often related to the shell, lining, down bag, needles, thread, and baffle construction.
Lightweight styles require closer control of baffle dimensions and fill weight. Mid-length, long, or low-temperature styles need particular attention to differences in filling between garment areas.

What to lock at sample approval
Do not approve only the sample appearance. Keep the final approved sample as the bulk comparison reference and update every revision in the tech pack, bill of materials, and size chart so that production does not follow an outdated version.

Critical filling specifications should be locked before a custom sample is made. The figures below are general references and are not fixed commitments for every project.

Actual timing depends on fabrics and trims, colors, size range, production processes, and the completeness of the order information. Whether the MOQ applies per style, per color, or to the combined order quantity must be confirmed in the formal quotation. The quotation or contract should also define the lead-time start point and whether days are counted as calendar days or working days.
Bulk QC should begin before final packing
Down jacket quality is best controlled in stages. Before production, verify fabrics, trims, filling documents, colors, size chart, labels, and packing information. Compare the first piece or pre-production sample point by point with the approved sample.
In addition to appearance, measurements, zippers, and packaging, final inspection should cover garment weight, marking, and agreed critical quality items under the agreed sampling plan. Total garment weight can help identify batch variation, but it does not prove that fill weight is correct. Verify fill weight through the sampling or test method agreed by both parties.
If destructive tests or third-party laboratory testing are required, define the sample quantity, method, cost, and pass criteria before ordering. Repeat orders cannot simply rely on an earlier result because down, fabric, and trim lots may change.

- Is a higher fill weight always better?
- No. Fill weight must be assessed together with fill power, down cluster content, fit, garment length, baffle volume, and use conditions. Overfilling a fixed space can also add weight and restrict normal loft.
- Is goose down always warmer than duck down?
- No. Compare products at the same down cluster content, fill power, fill weight, and garment construction. The filling species alone does not determine the insulation of a finished jacket.
- Is white down higher quality than gray down?
- No. Color mainly affects the risk of show-through under a light-colored shell. It is not a direct grade for warmth or fill power.
- Does quick recovery after pressing prove the fill power?
- No. Hand compression and recovery provide only an initial observation. Formal acceptance should use the test method and data agreed by both parties.
